What is Yerba Mate?

There is a strong sense of tradition behind Yerba Mate. Yerba Mate is pronounced as Jerba Mahtay. This South American traditional drink has long been associated with the spirit of communal harmony and friendship. Remember how the Native Americans would pass the tobacco “peace pipe” amongst themselves while they sat in their ceremonial teepee? Well, the Yerba Mate is a concept that runs along those very same lines, except that it is way more healthier!

Some avid drinkers have summed up the feeling they get from drinking a cup of Yerba Mate, as one akin to that which comes from drinking a fusion of tea and coffee but with the sweetness of chocolate. Many historians have claimed that Yerba Mate is an inherent part of the South American culture, with some going so far as to name it as the Latin American version of Ambrosia- The Nectar of The Gods!

Traditionally, Yerba Mate is prepared during community gatherings. The drink is prepared by infusing the leaves of the Mate plant, in water that is close to boiling but is definitely not boiling. It is an easy mistake to make- if these leaves are steeped in boiling water, the resultant drink will have a slightly bitter taste to it. And, that will be a definite spoiler!

Once the drink has been properly concocted, it is poured into a ceremonial cup, which is made from a hollowed-out gourd. Many believe the dried out gourd imparts its own earthy flavor to the drink. The gourd is then passed around to the members, who take turns to sip it with the help of a hollow straw-like tube, called the Bombilla. This Bombilla has a strainer at one end, which prevents the leaves from being sucked up. Once the drinker has had his fill, he/she will pass the gourd to the next person in the group. This event is known to foster a strong sense of camaraderie among the people in the group.

Yerba Mate is now being drunk by people across the world, and it comes in different flavors like orange and mint. And, many people are singing praises of the numerous health benefits linked to it.
